Going on vacation to Fredericksburg? However, when there are more than a dozen wineries in the Rocky Hill Country, it is easy to get lost in constructing the ideal weekend. The bad news: the good news is that you do not need to guess. I was raised here and having sampled my way through all the tasting rooms on (and off) the beaten path, I have whittled it down to the ones I never regret going to.
Those that make my list include:
- Wine of the highest quality – predominantly Texas grown varietals.
- Breathtaking grounds – since atmosphere is the key to it being what you hold in your hand.
- Space to breathe – no elbow to elbow presses.
- And exceptional wine did I say?–two times.
This is not a generalized list of the best wineries scraped off the internet. It is a living list and is constructed on the places I personally visit, time and again.
William + Chris
Hill Country Old World charisma collides with serious Texas wine.
This small wine shop is nothing but craft. William + Chris is a dry, food-friendly varietal focused, that demonstrates what Texas terroir is capable of. Have a glass of wine outside in the patio and enjoy time with live music, or reserve a seated tasting session in anticipation of the total experience.
The hint: Tastings are booked quickly, and need to be booked early before you are left with a single bottle of wine and a porch to watch.
August Vin Winery
The one I never miss when I am at home.
August Vin is located on the more secluded end of town, out of the hustle and bustle of the Wine Trail, with some of the most stunning grounds in Fredericksburg. Imagine architecture that can be featured in a design magazine, expansive outdoor seating and a live music without being like a performance. They are also striving towards being a full estate winery; all of the drops will one day be off of grapes grown on their own land, that is, one of few in the area.
Vibe: Temperance, highbrow, tranquil very Hill Country elegance.
Narrow Path Winery
Worth the added drive.
Situated in the vicinity of Albert, Texas, approximately 10-15 minutes off of Highway 290, Narrow Path is offered to those who are not afraid of driving a bit. Sky-scraping impeccable modern structures stand in contrast to lines of vines, and at least as impressive as the scenery is the wine. Take a car, take time, and establish.
Vibe check: Hang around, take time.
Kuhlman Cellars
To alcohol/food lovers.
Just off 290, Kuhlman presents one of the rarest cuisine in the city; they have a chef-prepared food match menu that was developed to match their Texas wines. The employees will take you on a tour of the rationale that led to each pairing, transforming a mere tasting into a miniature lesson.
Best Dec type: The foodie who identifies themselves as such but desires to know what is in the glass.
Grape Creek Winery + Heath Sparkling Wines
The Tuscany made to run on Main Street.
The Grape Creek tasting room has been remodelled and forms part of the original 290 Wine Trail with its new tasting room in the very central part of Fredericksburg. Its winery experience including a complete tasting, tours and restaurant within its grounds, it is not a wonder that this venue attracts visitors to the location nationwide.
Proceed with caution: Saturdays are busy, and the experience is more member-focused towards wine club members. Nonetheless, the wine is good and the Tuscan ambience is incomparable.
A block away (shared parking lot, same owner) is Heath Sparkling Wines – the first estate that focuses on Texas sparkling wine tasting room. You must book in advance in case bubbly features on your must-try list.
Feel: Tuscan taste with longevity. Thousands of tillers.
Signor Vineyards
Garden party energy
The patio at Signor appears to extend infinitely and so it is where one would be best suited to lay out a charcuterie board and share good company. The indoor tasting room is kept small (reservations are recommended) to ensure that the outdoor area remains the star. Their wine is mostly Oregon, and there are just a few selections of Texas wine.
Vibe-check: Carefree garden-party style.
Baron’s Creek Vineyards
Created in honor of the memory-makers.
Having a beautiful back patio, yard games, on-site private rooms to stay overnight, and an award winning rosé, Baron’s Creek is designed to linger. It is fine but not fussy–where the photos are as good as the wine.
Vibe check: All angles are impeccable.

It’s my evolving list of favorites in Fredericksburg – compiled over years of being there, not reviewing this on the Internet. Trying to find sweeping Hill Country vistas, a tasting menu with your personal chef or just a patio and a glass of something local? You will find a place on this list.
